Hawaii: Music from the Islands of Aloha
by David Hicks
Aloha Larry- Larry Deniston is not gone, he’s just moved closer to the live performances.
My album pick this month was sponsored by the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau. In fact, I think I may have obtained it for free from them on one of my many visits to the island. Or I picked it up in a Hawaiian airport gift shop? Anyway, I love this album because it features such a wide variety of contemporary artists. That variety portrays the best of the music from the Hawaiian Islands as a way to appeal to the largest possible audience of visitors. There is something for everyone on this album. The mix crosses a series of subgenres- Hawaiian music is not all Don Ho, though you will find the Don Ho track, I’ll Remember You, on the album as a last track that seems to be a perfect closing to the album. But before you reach the end, you’ll get to listen to the opening track, Live A Little, by the Hawaiian Style Band; followed by a sampling of a who’s who including the perfect pairing of guitars from HAPA performing, He’eia; and the quintessential voice of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole on the song, Kamalani, though my favorite track on the album is Iz’s rendition of White Sandy Beach. Listening to this track always make me want to pick up my ukulele and book a ticket to Kauai.
But the whole of this album is a perfectly compiled arrangement of artists without a clunker in the bunch. See the complete artist playlist, below.
And while I was not able to find this album on Qobuz or YouTube to stream, all of the artist are available individually. And what the heck, you can always fly to Hawaii to visit Larry and pick up a copy for yourself at the airport.
