Vintage LUXMAN MQ 68C Custom Tube Amplifier
Author Last Post

Oldie but goodie, some of the best transformers.

Push pull triode, designed by Tim De Paravicini with specially wound transformers to emulate 300b but with 30 watts per channel. Did it work? It’s in the eye of the beholder, but it sounds plenty good in the tube way.

It uses 50CA10 triode tubes. No longer in production, but sets can still be found both in original and Shuguang types which Shuguang continued to manufacture. Some people modify them to use KT88 tubes.

This one has the original NEC/Luxman tubes that still work and sound great, and comes with an extra set of the Shuguang 50CA10 tubes.

This particular model was sent to Hovland while they were still operational. It was upgraded with critical wiring and Hovland’s caps. The scratchy volume knob was taken out of circuit. The input tube was changed to 12AX7 to give it an all triode signal path (12au7 and 12at7 can also be used to adjust gain). The signal splitter tube is a 6CG7.

The various adjustment pots for the input tubes have been changed to fixed bias. However, input tubes selected for close matching segments are all that is needed. When output tubes are changed, the bias to output tubes will need to be adjusted to 50 milli amps, which can be done with a small screwdriver and a volt meter. A copy of the original amplifier’s service manual can be e mailed. Probably best for somebody with tube experience and circuits who can use the volt meter.

Available to audition through speakers, but all sales are final with no return on pickup. $900 with extra set of tubes cash and carry.
