In 1790, Alessandro Volta (For whom the Volt was named) stuck one end of a electrical circuit into each ear and experienced "a boom within the head," followed by a sound similar to that of boiling thick soup." Given this shocking experience, he never repeated the experiment, but his observations provided the first evidence that our perception of sound is mediated, in part, by electrical events in our head.
